Hazelnut lying in the palm of my hand. This little thing that is made that is beneath our Lady Saint Mary, God showed me as little as it had been a hazelnut, and to my understanding, and it was around as a ball. I looked thereupon with the eye of my understanding and thought “What may this be?” And it was generally answered thus, “It is all that is made.” I marveled how it might last, for I thought it might suddenly have fallen to nought for littleness. And I was answered in my understanding, “It lasts and ever shall, for God loves it”. And so all things have their beginning being by the love of God. In this little thing I saw three properties: The first is that God made it; the second that God loves it; The third that God keeps it. But what is this to me, beheld I, truly, the Maker, the Keeper, and the Lover. I cannot tell. … This little thing that is made, I thought, might have fallen to nought for littleness. And who shall do this deed? Truly himself by his mercy and his grace, for he has made me for this and blissfully restored me thereto.
